I just googled Max Beckmann, because I want to see the latest exhibition about his work at the Kunsthalle Bremen, and ended up on an awesome website that is called Arts in Exile. The website is availlable in German and English and run by the exile network and some of the most important German research institutions, museums and libaries. Lot’s of material about various artists who worked for film, theater, fine arts, literature and what not had ended up in exile for various reasons. You can search the material via “people”, “area of art”, “country of exile” and “profession” and it covers the periode from 1933 till today! Totally loosing myself in this virtuel archive at the moment. Check it out! If you are up for Max Beckmann you need to plan a trip to Bremen before February 4, 2018. Not sure, if I will make it…probably not.
The live entertainment industry is a big market. Think about light and sound design, camera solutions, laser shows and pyrotechnics to name only a few working areas. Do you want to know what happens, if a person like me visits the Musikmesse Frankfurt (International Music Exhibition Frankfurt) for the first time? Well I will be please to tell you. I was overwhelmed, started to count the exhibition halls first and spent my lunch time to read the list of events to understand how huge this exhibition is. I really had noooooooo clue. There are about 11 huge halls with all kinds of instruments and equipments you can think of and check out. The program of the exhibition describes the fallowing major fields: Light + Stage, Sound + Audio, Light + Multimedia, Light + Effects, Education + Events, Classic meets Acoustic, Education meets Fun, Classic meets Keys, Electro meets Recording, Classic meets Jazz and Rock meets Pop. Not to speak about the additional Musikmesse Festival with another 30 locations and 50 concerts around the city in Frankfurt. The Musikmesse Frankfurt is an international trade fair for musical instruments, sheet music, music production and marketing (four days). The only way to survive and enjoy this exhibition is to filter quickly what might be interesting for oneself and focus on a very few topics and events you really want to learn more about. I found the prolight+sound conference quiet interesting and went to a lecture about Beijing Opera and Theatre traditions given by Gao Guangijan, the Director of Stage Design at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing. His talk was very interesting, although just a very few people came to listen to this lecture and they had some problems to translate the Chinese presentation into English. The other thing I was impressed about was a backstage tour and equipment show in the hall rented by the company PRG. PRG is a company that offers one-stop production solutions for huge concerts in the live entertainment sector. The laser- and pyroshow was impressive and one technician told me that they worked for four days in shifts to build up all the computers and technical equipment (e.g. 9000 spotlights!) that was necessary for this exhibition. Well done I thought. They know how to sell their products and make money. If you want to master electrical and sound technology, want to learn more about event management in Europe and around the world or buy a new instrument this is your exhibition.
